Question for future of Black Sea: Now what?

13 Eylül 2010

Local and international commitment is required to help the Black Sea region develop to its full potential, according to a rapporteur for a forward-looking report prepared by the Commission on the Black Sea.

Though the release of the report, “A 2020 Vision for the Black Sea Region,” technically fulfills the mission of the commission, members want to use the expertise they have established in the region’s major issues to take action to help increase cooperation and growth, Mustafa Aydın, the rector of Kadir Has University, told the Hürriyet Daily News & Economic Review in a recent interview.

“The question we face is, ‘What do we do now?’” Aydın said, adding that the commission was considering splitting into sub-groups to efficiently deal with issues such as fishing and pollution through small-scale projects rather than targeting major problems that the commission would be unable to solve on its own.

The commission’s report focuses on four main issues: economic development and welfare, peace and security, democratic institutions and good governance, and regional cooperation. In line with its recommendations, Aydın said, there is potential to heighten synergies between the region’s civil-society organizations, media outlets and businesses. “We could encourage universities [in the region] to exchange students and activities,” he added, noting that such activities would not require a large amount of financial or other investment and would thus be more feasible.
